About the Project:
I was commissioned to create a special book by a client to be presented as a christening present of his godson, ‘Julius’. The book was self published and contains a series of carefully selected poems. I worked closely alongside the client to come up with a design suitable for this binding. The theme of the book was based around The Tombstone Mountains in the Yukon, with the colours chosen to symbolise the natural colours of the landscape in that region.
About:
- Bound with brown goatskin on the spine and darker brown bookcloth on the boards.
- Leather-jointed endpapers and edge-to-edge doublures patterned with a map design.
- The cover was embroidered with gold thread to depict the outline of a mountain range.
- The name of the book, author and recipient were embroidered onto the covers.
- Made leather endbands were secured to the head and tail of the spine.
- The book has an accompanying slipcase covered in the same leather, cloth and patterned paper as used on the book.
Design Description:
The cover design of the book was based on a mountain scene that meant a lot to the client: The Tombstone Mountains in the Yukon. The Tombstone Mountains are a remote wilderness area within Tombstone Territorial Park in northern Yukon, Canada, known for their rugged peaks, colourful tundra, and permafrost landforms.
The park is home to many species of birds, including wild geese, as well as caribou, moose, and bears. It is a protected wilderness area featuring unique ecosystems. The silhouette of a single goose was embroidered onto the outside of the slipcase. A map of this area was used across the doublures and endpapers, plus to line the inside of the slipcase.
