About the Project:
I was commissioned to make three head adornments for the “Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up” exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum which ran from the 16 June 2018 to 18 November 2018. Frida Kahlo was known for wearing flowers in her hair and my brief was to “create something beautiful but at the same time subtle. There are so many interpretations of Frida, we want ours to be respectful and
not pastiche”.
About:
- The flowers were made from recycled paper to match the paper covering the bespoke fibreglass “Frida Kahlo” mannequin heads.
- Based on photographic images, the flowers were designed to add some more context to the mannequins in the exhibition.
- The paper was coloured with acrylic paint washes and also metallic leaf to add extra detail.
Design Description:
