About the Project:
I was commissioned to make one wig for the “The Lure of the Floating World” exhibition at Lakeland Arts in Cumbria during 2021. The wig made for this exhibition was inspired by a previous set of Japanese wigs I made for the Victoria and Albert Museum’s exhibition, “Kimonos: Kyoto to Catwalk”, the year before.
The exhibition was designed to explore 150 years of cultural and artistic exchange between Britain and Japan. As part of the exhibition, they were displaying a late Edo period kimono mounted on a mannequin and wanted a wig made to bring the display to life.
About:
- The wig was made to fit onto a fibreglass mannequin head.
- The wig was constructed onto a frame made of Rigilene boning.
- It was made from ivory coloured crinoline to match the colour of the mannequin so as not to distract from the wonderful bright Kimono displayed on it.
